During this project I will explain my relationship with four different concepts that I have read about, this will include how those concepts help me understand and conquer our rhetorically-active and information-saturated world. I will then talk about how this class has challenged my view of myself as a writer, which projects I thought were the hardest, and what I think you should change about the class. Overall I will be explaining how I think this class affected me the most and how I view myself as a writer.
My first and favorite concept I want to talk about is the Activity Theory that Donna Kain and Elizabeth Wardle describe to be a lens that helps you have a better understanding of objects or any incident that you confront. The activity theory is what you go through to find the information about how and why something is functioning. It then goes on to tie into the activity system, which is what considers people’s common motives and how they try to accomplish those motives. The Activity Theory diagram helps you understand the “context” of a community by showing the important elements in group work and how they connect with one another to complete the Activity System. In the Activity Theory diagram there are 6 elements; Tools, Subjects, Rules, Community, Division of Labor, and Motives. These elements work together to create a working Activity System. I believe that this concept is a big help when there’s a lot of information and you need help understanding why someone, something, or a group, is doing whatever they do. It helps us see what it is that makes everything work. The Activity Theory tells me more information than I would get if I did a rhetorical analysis because it does not go as deep. A rhetorical analysis only covers the outside information other than how and why it is the way it is. This is why I think that this theory was important and had a good relationship with me.
The next concept I’ll cover will be James Paul Gee’s Affinity Spaces. James claims that the idea of “community of practice” can give people the wrong idea about itself and sometimes not the best thing to use for schools and workplaces. Affinity Spaces does not label everyone in a group like community of practice does; this being said, Affinity Spaces describe the community in work environments better than the community of practice does because even though everyone might be in the same workplace, some people can be locked in and working, and some people can be sleeping on their desk. People can be in the same space but not equally on the same page as other people in the space. More and more spaces are growing every day as we keep advancing in technology and making more websites and games that we can connect on. For a space to even become a real thing it first has to have content, the space has to have an idea or a reason. The content in space Gee calls a generator. A generator is kind of the whole purpose you’re even in the space, whatever you’re focusing on. For someone to enter a space there has to be some type of portal for him or her to enter. For example, getting on Facebook and messaging someone; you would be using Facebook as the portal and then the messaging system as the generator. On the other hand sometimes a portal can be a generator at the same time if it’s possible to change any of the content while you’re in the portal. He gives a great example by stating a science book can be both by creating a portal for the students to enter and then using it as a generator to learn from it. Gee’s explains Affinity Spaces to be spaces that allow change to come within the space by people that are using the generator. Call Of Duty is a huge Affinity Space that is an interactional organization that updates itself monthly and has multiple websites where people talk about the game, mod it their self, or gives it reviews.
