Describe the value of surveying the reading.
Surveying the reading is important because it gives the reader a feel for what they are about to read. It provides a little more understanding of the topic by first going over any information that is provided up front: charts, graphs, titles, authors, etc.
What questions did you ask as you were reading?
Is this reading something that I am interested in? How much do I know about the solid-waste problem? Do these graphs show anything important? What can I do to help improve the situation? I did not realize that leaves and grass clippings contributed to a growing trash problem at certain times of the year, I wonder how much it effects it?
How did surveying and questioning help you read better? The figures/graphs first helped to establish the topic and the importance of the topic by giving me a drawing to refer to before, during and after I read the selected article about the solid-waste problem. As I was reading I kept going back and looking at the figure to match it up with what the article was telling me. By asking myself how much I already knew about the issue and addressing the answers as I read in the article, I was able to learn so much more and open my mind up a little more to the issue. It helped me grasp the waste problem topic much better and I definitely learned a few things that I did not know.
How did you decide what parts of your reading you needed to recite? The figures and statistics were a little confusing so I went over those a couple of times just to get a feel for the comparison the author was trying to make. The graphs helped out a lot with that.
How often do you plan to review?
